Assuring Adequate Disposal Capacity
Is a Necessity

Where waste is taken for disposal is a market-driven economic decision made by customers, involving the cost of disposal and the cost of transportation. The role of the waste industry is to provide safe and efficient disposal facilities for all who wish to use them.

Overall, southwestern Pennsylvania has the largest amount of waste disposal capacity remaining, but eastern and central Pennsylvania face a growing scarcity.

Complicating the situation is that disposal capacity is not spread evenly across the Commonwealth. It appears that in the near future, disposal sites in the southeast and southcentral regions could be unable to handle the volume of waste they currently do. This could mean more waste moving east-to-west to reach disposal facilities in the southwest, where the largest unused capacity remains.

The bottom line is that sufficient capacity for safe and efficient disposal of waste is not a luxury. It is a necessity.
