Protecting our shared environment
Modern landfills are specifically designed to protect the environment.
Basically, they’re closed containment systems with multiple safety features.
Pennsylvania’s landfills are closely regulated and are constantly
inspected and monitored by local municipalities, the Pennsylvania
Department of Environment Protection (DEP), and the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency.
A heavy-duty liner system engineered to last hundreds of years
surrounds and envelops the waste and provides multiple layers of
protection for the environment.
A collection system catches water seepage from the waste known
as leachate. Leachate is either reused on site or treated before
being released.
